UFO - Animal Reaction

Index Page

What might have been the first recorded claim of attempted alien abduction came during the Great Airship sightings in the late nineteenth century, early on the evening of November 25, 1896. Colonel H. G. Shaw said he, with a companion, Camille Spooner, had left Lodi, California, "when the horse stopped suddenly and gave a snort of terror."

On the night in question, Maruis Dewilde was reading after his wife and children had retired. It was 10:30 p.m. when he heard his dog Kiki barking, and thinking there was a prowler in the vicinity of his property, he took a flashlight and went outside.

Dewilde walked to his garden, found nothing en route, then spotted a dark mass on the railroad tracks less than 6 yards from his door. He thought at first that someone had left a farm cart there. At that point his dog approached, crawling on her belly and whining, and simultaneously he heard hurried footsteps to the right of him. The dog began barking again and Dewilde directed his flashlight toward the sound of the footsteps.

Dennis Crowe. The disc shaped craft was sitting silently. The only sound he heard at the time was barking from some dogs. They were barking directly at the object. Crowe had made his first observations at several hundred feet, and as he came to within about 60 feet, the object lifted itself from the ground. Crowe could now hear a sound..a sound like air being forced out of f a balloon.

The disc shaped UFO quickly climbed into the air, and within about 10 seconds, it had disappeared. The dogs were now silent. Crowe had been the only human to see the strange craft.

Harold Butcher. Sixteen year old Harold Butcher was milking the cows in his father's barn in Cherry Creek, N.Y. As he was working, he was listening to Radio Station WKBW. Just outside a three-year old bull was tied by the nose to a metal pipe. It was about 8:20 p.m., August 19, 1965.

Harold heard the bull make a noise "like I have never heard come from an animal before." Looking out of the window, the teen-ager saw the animal was actually bending the pipe. Simultaneously he saw a metallic-looking, football-shaped UFO about 50 feet long and approximately 20 feet thick hovering just above the trees an estimated 450 feet from the barn.

At about 10:30 that evening, Mathews said, his German shepherd, tied to a chain out back, began barking loudly, so he went outside to investigate. After turning him loose, Mathews said the dog, which he had acquired only three weeks earlier, ran to the edge of an adjacent cornfield. He was astonished at what he saw next.

"I happened to look up and there was that UFO right above the cornfield, it was just hovering right up above the power lines" about 200 feet in the air, Mathews said.

Ronald Johnson. Ronald and his dog Snowball were suddenly surprised to see an object hovering about two feet off the ground in a grove of trees some twenty-five yards from where he stood.

According to Jacques Vallee, even the animals were traumatized by the sighting.

For about two weeks, every evening at sunset, the sheep would jump out of the pen and run wildly. The dog would furiously try to get into the house at nightfall. He practically destroyed the screen door, and the only way to keep him outside was to replace it with a stronger metal door.

David Bates, 8, and Steven and Henry Stillie, aged 10 and 7. David Bates, who was carrying a pet cat in his arms, found he could not control the animal as it arched its back and attempted to escape frantically. Releasing it, he watched it run several yards and then drop in its tracks, as if it "fell asleep," he said. The Stillie boys described it as "playing dead."

The UFO began to settle down for a landing and the noise became a buzz, the children claimed. All this took place within a few brief minutes. At that point the terrified cat recovered and returned to its owner, clawing David when he picked it up. The long scratch on his arm was still visible when I interviewed him in September.

Jane Baker. It was hovering over some evergreen trees. Jane went back into the house to put on heavier clothing, then went back out, taking the family dog with her. She was proceeding toward the evergreens when the dog gave a big yelp and started to whine and paw at her ears. Then the dog became completely still. Jane says she didn't hear anything, but carried the dog into the house. When she came back out again, the object was gone.

Within seconds of their first observation of the object, the witnesses became aware that the object was travelling generally in the direction of a herd of elk that they had been watching all morning. They continued to watch as the object proceeded toward the herd until it succeeded in getting quite close to the animals. The animals apparently remained unaware of the objectís presence until it was within a very short distance of the herd.

Suddenly, the animals bolted, most of the them running up the slope to their east. However, one adult animal was seen by the witnesses to separate itself from the herd and run or trot to generally to the north, perhaps along a logging road. The witnesses report that at this point, the object quickly moved directly above the lone elk and seemed to lift it off the ground, although no visible means of support of the animal was evident to the observers.

A farmer heard his dogs barking very loudly. He looked outside and noticed a very bright light in his field. He decided to walk over the field with his dogs. The dogs were apparently afraid and refused to go. As he neared the area where the lights were located, they suddenly blacked out. He decided to return home. His dogs acted very violently toward him, apparently not recognizing him. He ran up to the second floor and used his binoculars to search the field. He now could see a lighted disc shaped object. He was able to see what appeared to be lighted windows on the object. He then noticed movement in a thicket near the disc. Suddenly a figure moved quickly from the thicket to the object. Shortly after the object brightened and took off.
