Dr. Enrique Caretenuto Botta. He saw a metallic, disc-shaped object sitting on the ground just off of the road. He stopped and watched the UFO for a few minutes. He saw nothing happen, and decided to walk to the craft and enter it though an open doorway. Inside, he could see control panels, lights, knobs, meters, and more. He was shocked to see three alien beings, all sitting dead on a curved seat.

One of the observers, a scientist from the University of California Personnel Division watched one of the three objects thru a telescope and said that it looked flat, metallic and was roughly circular and about nine feet in diameter.

Capt. Jack Adams and First Officer G.W. Anderson. Captain Adams added that "there was a bright white light flashing intermittently from the top of the thing. The speed attracted our attention first, that and the blinking light. It was the strongest blue white light we've ever seen.

The object appeared to be circular, with a diameter of approximately 100 feet and with a vertical height considerably less than the diameter, giving the object a disk-like shape. In the top center was a light which was blinking at an estimated 3 flashes per second. This light was so brilliant that it would have been impossible to look at it continuously had it not been blinking. This light could be seen only when the object was approaching and after it had passed the airliner. When the object passed in front of the observers, the bottom side was visible. The bottom side appeared to have 9 to 12 symmetrical oval or circular portholes located in a circle approximately 3/4 of the distance from the center to the outer edge. Through these portholes came a soft purple light about the shade of aircraft line without spinning. Considering the visibility, the length of time the object was in sight, and the distance from the object, the Reserve Air Force Captain estimates the speed to be in excess of 1000 mph.

The object was very bright, almost silvery. A disk-shaped object with a lower and upper structure and a small turret like protrusion on top.

Oscar Linke. "I approached until 1 was only about 10 meters from them. I looked over a small fence and then I noticed a large object whose diameter I estimated to be between 13 and 15 meters. It looked like a huge frying pan. "There were two rows of holes on its periphery, about 30 centimeters in circumference. The space between the two rows was about 0.45 meters. On the top of this metal object was a black conical tower about three meters high. "Now, the side of the object on which the holes had been opened began to glitter. Its color seemed green but later turned to red. At the same time I began to hear a slight hum. While the brightness and hum increased, the conical tower began to slide down into the center of the object. The whole object then began to rise slowly from the ground and rotate like a top. "It seemed to me as if it were supported by the cylindrical plant which had gone down from the top of the object, through the center, and had now appeared from its bottom on the ground. "The object, surrounded by a ring of flames, was now a certain number of feet above the ground. "I then noted that the whole object had risen slowly from the ground. The cylinder on which it was supported had now disappeared within its center and had reappeared on the top of the object. "The rate of climb had now become greater. At the same time my daughter and I heard a whistling sound similar to that heard when a bomb falls. "The object rose to a horizontal position, turned toward a neighboring town, and then, gaining altitude, it disappeared over the heights and forests in the direction of Stockheim."Linke continued, "I had never heard of the term 'flying saucer' before I escaped from the Soviet Zone into West Berlin. When I saw this object, I immediately thought that it was a new Soviet military machine.

The southwestern portion of the United States is noted as a focal point for such alleged close encounters with UFOs. Reports of such encounters were especially numerous and well-publicized during the 1950s. (7)

CIA's Role in the Study of UFOs, 1947-90

In November 1954, CIA had entered into the world of high technology with its U-2 overhead reconnaissance project. Working with Lockheed's Advanced Development facility in Burbank, California, known as the Skunk Works, and Kelly Johnson, an eminent aeronautical engineer, the Agency by August 1955 was testing a high-altitude experimental aircraft--the U-2. It could fly at 60,000 feet; in the mid-1950s, most commercial airliners flew between 10,000 feet and 20,000 feet. Consequently, once the U-2 started test flights, commercial pilots and air traffic controllers began reporting a large increase in UFO sightings.

An eminent British scientist, R. V. Jones, headed a standing committee created in June 1951 on flying saucers. Jones' and his committee's conclusions on UFOs were similar to those of Agency officials: the sightings were not enemy aircraft but misrepresentations of natural phenomena. The British noted, however, that during a recent air show RAF pilots and senior military officials had observed a "perfect flying saucer." Given the press response, according to the officer, Jones was having a most difficult time trying to correct public opinion regarding UFOs. The public was convinced they were real.

Will Jansen, a marine engineer and designer, was visiting in Kerkrade, Holland. Just after midnight a disc-shaped craft with visible superstructure swooped down to low altitude, hovered, zigzagged and sped away. A second disc-shaped UFO, similar in outline, was then seen hovering farther away. Finally it tilted up vertically and shot up out of sight.

An instrument technician, while driving from a large city toward an Air Force base on December 22, 1952, saw an object from his car at 1930 hours. He stopped his car to watch it. It suddenly moved up toward the zenith in spurts from right to left at an angle of about 45°. It then moved off in level flight at a high rate of speed, during which maneuver it appeared white most of the time, but apparently rolled three times showing a red side. About halfway through its roll it showed no light at all. It finally assumed a position to the south of the planet Jupiter at a high altitude, at which position it darted back and forth, left and right alternately. Total time of the observation was 15 minutes. Apparently, the observer just stopped watching the object.

Stephen Darbishire photograph.

Stephen told a reporter they could clearly see every detail: “The object was glistening and it was a silvery milky colour. You could tell the outline of it very plainly indeed and see portholes along the upper part, and a thing which looked like a hatch on top. There were three bumps underneath and the centre of the underneath part was of a darker colour. I took the first picture when it was moving very slowly about three or four hundred yards away and then it disappeared from my view as there was some undergrowth in the way. When it came into sight again I took another picture but then it suddenly went up into the sky in a great swish. As it went upwards it tilted and I could see the underneath side more clearly. There was some sort of whistling sound as it went up which I think was the wind.”

Doctor Martinet. "First of all, I thought of some atmospheric phenomenon, such as a cloudburst etc. But the wind blew from the North-West, and the phenomenon came from the South. Thirty seconds later, whereas we were about fifteen people to observe this object, it started to go down in a falling leaf manner, offering the aspect of a plate whose relief had been turned upwards. At 05:16 P.M., it suddenly presented itself upfron in the shape of a perfect disc. After that, it came to the apparent vertical location above the cablecar station of Revard, went down a little, then suddenly accelerated and disappeared as fast as a thunderflash. It was exactly 05:18:40 P.M."

"Depending on the angles of observation, the object went from a dark gray aluminum to a clearer gray. The phenomenon had lasted a little more than four minutes, during which I noted all his complicated moves on my note-book."

Adding to the concern was a flying saucer sighting by US Senator Richard Russell and his party while traveling on a train in the USSR in October 1955. After extensive interviews of Russell and his group, however, CIA officials concluded that Russell's sighting did not support the theory that the Soviets had developed saucer like or unconventional aircraft. Herbert Scoville, Jr., the Assistant Director of OSI, wrote that the objects observed probably were normal jet aircraft in a steep climb.

Georgia Senator Richard Russell. To his considerable astonishment his eyes focused on a large disc-shaped object slowly ascending as a flame shot from underneath it. The object then raced north across the tracks in front of the train. Russell scurried to alert his two companions, who looked out to see a second disc do what the first had just done. At that moment Soviet trainmen shut the curtains and ordered the American passengers not to look outside.

Dipl.-meteorologist Elizabeth Klarer caused an international controversy with her claim of a contact with Extraterrestrials. Her book "Beyond the Light Barrier", written more in the style of a romantic novel, caused a rather sceptical response, since Klarer claimed she became pregnant after her encounter with a tall, white-haired spaceship-pilot. Only in the Nineties, when cases of pregnancies after UFO abductions were given attention by serious researchers, the Klarer case received a more serious attention. Indeed Cynthia Hind, Africa´s most respected UFO researcher and MUFON representative, managed to locate and interview several eyewitnesses of Klarer´s contacts. Furthermore, Klarer was a well-respected member of the South African society. Her husband was a major of the South African Airforce, Elizabeth herself worked for the Airforce Intelligence. Her photo series of an "extraterrestrial spaceship" (as she called it) was taken in the presence of two witnesses whom she wanted to show the site of her first contact. With them she drove through the Zulu-Land, the foothills of the mighty Drakens-Mountains, when she noticed a flash of light between the mighty thunderstorm clouds. Immediately she stopped, left the car together with her companions, in her hand theBrownie Box Camera she had brought with her. A moment later she recognized the metallic disc in the dark-clouded sky, obviously slowly approaching. Immediately, like in a reflex action, Elizabeth shot seven photos before the disc suddenly shot away. In the same moment a thunderstorm started, a shower of hail went over the field. Elizabeth Klarer confirmed the authenticity of her photos in an notarized affidavit. She stood behind her story until she died in February 1994, in the age of 83 years.

Four of the seven UFO photos taken by Elizabeth Klarer on July 17, 1956 - enlargements. Note that the cloud formations did not change remarkably on the last two photos, indicating that they were shot within seconds. The disc seems to follow a clean curve, ruling out the possibility of a frisbee or a hub cap thrown into the air.

(Upper) the Rouen flying disk and (lower) two views of the McMinnville flying disk.

Paul Trent photo.

Flying to intercept a mysterious radar reflection, an unknown French Air Force pilot photographed this craft in March 1954 (1957?) over Rouen with his gun-sight camera. The UFO paced the plane for several minutes before speeding off past the maximum velocity of the French airplane. This UFO appears to be of the same type that appeared in McMinnville, Oregon over the farm of Mr. Paul Trent.

The Air Force had a plan to outfit a squadron of planes with gun cameras and the station them around the country with orders to scramble when there was a UFO sighting in the vicinity. A pilot assigned to participate in these intercepts claimed they were successful on a number of occasions, providing close-up views of UFOs (contrary to Edward J. Ruppelt of Project Blue Book claims that a plan to outfit a squadron of planes with gun cameras was never implemented because it was too expensive). The pilot had seen three domed discs in a tight formation outrunning the latest fighters, Gun camera film from a number of intercepts were made, but the pilots had no opportunity to see them and none of them knew what happened to the films after they were removed from the aircraft. Brad Mildern. My first sighting took place in Stawell, Victoria Australia, in about 1958. (Boy, how does anyone remember back that far.) I was around eleven years of age and it was probably spring or summer of that year as it was a fine cloudless day. Not usual at all, in the other months of the year. I remember the occurrence vividly. It was 11:30 AM and I was about to leave the house by the front door. This door faces due west and if not for the house across the street it would have been possible to see the Grampians Mountains around 20 Km away. As I left the house, I noticed a gleaming silver object the size of a dot at an elevation of 15 to 20 degrees dead ahead of me. It was later estimated by all witnesses to be around 10 Km distant which would mean its height would have been around 1,500 to 2,000 feet. It was giving off a series of repeated bright lights from underneath, Blue, Red, Green, White, in that order. I couldn't see what the “dot” was, but it was hovering in the one spot without moving. I watched it for a few minutes and then called my parents who came and saw the same thing as I did. After a while we called the neighbors from across the street, who brought over their tripod mounted telescope. It was only a 4 inch 'scope but it brought the object into clear and undisputed view. It was a classic early 1950s flying saucer.
A flat bottomed disc with a turret type dome on top with windows and the old 3 ball type undercarriage protrusions beneath it. The flashing lights were coming from a point directly under the middle of the disc. I had seen pictures of the original flying saucers, which by that time, had been resoundingly debunked by officialdom and ridiculed by the press so I was not a stranger to what it was. Nor were my parents and my neighbors. There was one difference I noted from the pictures though. Where the old pictures showed round porthole type windows, this craft had vertically elongated rectangular windows with rounded tops. Just like the narrow church windows you sometimes see. All of us watched that disc hovering there without movement or change until after 1 PM, almost 2 hours. Having other things to do, we gradually broke up and went away and the next time I looked for it, it was gone. With multiple witnesses watching this UFO in daylight for such a long period through a telescope, I conclude that there is no doubt it was an alien constructed flying machine. What its reasons for being there and all the other question as to where it came from, etc., remain unknown, but one thing is for sure…. It shaped my belief in the phenomenon for the rest of my life. Brad Mildern January 5, 2004.

Hello Aguiar. On April 24, 1959, Hello Augiar was driving along the Plata beach In Salvador, a beach in northern Brazil, when his engine suddenly stopped. He then witnessed a flying saucer flying along the beach and took four photos of it. It is interesting to note the symbols on the underside of the craft in this drawing. The craft had four hemispherical protrusions in the center of the craft on the bottom and three ribs or tubes on the top of the craft. This discoid vehicle is similar to the type of craft allegedly made at Marconi's secret city, and is also similar to the Schriever-Habermohl flying disc made by Germany at the BMW factory near Prague in 1944, and first flown on February 4, 1945 (German Jet Genesis by David Masters, 1982, Jane's Books, London. Page 135). After taking these photos on Plata Beach, Salvador, Brazil, (April 24, 1959) Hello Aguiar lost consciousness. When he came to, he was clutching this message, written in his own hand:

Fr. William Gill. Four "men" illuminated by blue light on top of hovering disc-shaped craft with four legs; responded to waves by witnesses.
